Cultivating Connections partners with MAPS Media Institute on youth development project

February 6, 2017

Cultivating Connections has partnered with MAPS Media Institute to develop another internship opportunity for area youth to learn meaningful life skills and explore new vocational areas. The Cultivating Connections Toolkit Internship will be a 10 week crash course in sustainable farming,

curriculum building, and media arts. The intern will spend time every day learning by doing - growing

food, planning learning activities, and directing informative and inspirational videos. After the ten weeks of service, the intern will have created a multi-media tool kit and planned for its distribution. The tool kit will be used by farms across the state/nation to help them incorporate youth and special needs programs into their farm system. The intern will develop a series of learning activities for each group that works with Cultivating Connections program. These activities will be described in written form and demonstrated on film, in live action on the farm. The intern will create a learning series for the following groups: Autism/Special Needs, Kindergarten, 1st -5th grade, 6th -9th grade, 10th-12th grade, preschool, parent with young child, and making youth to elder connections. In addition, the videos will be used to demonstrate ‘best practices’ in situations like: working with children with autism, at risk youth, introducing youth to animals, and managing hazards.

The goal of this internship and partnership with MAPS is to facilitate the expansion of the Cultivating

Connections Programs to other farms across Montana/the nation. The intern will create a useful multi-

media guide that includes games, ideas, best practices, and demonstrations. The dissemination of this tool kit will also be planned by the intern. The toolkit will give deeper meaning to the on-farm activities, encouraging youth to get involved in knowing their food and community. It will connect learning with fun for multiple different age groups and audiences.
